BANK HOLIDAY DAY TRIP TO PANTASAPH AND LLANDUDNO

A day trip organized by the parish of St Matthew's saw 50 people young and old set off after Mass to Pantasaph Friary and then on to Llandudno in North Wales. The coach set off  in brilliant sunshine and arrived in Pantasaph at 12noon. The Friary was holding it's annual Garden Party with stalls, the singing Friar and lunch. At 2pm the party then moved to LLandudno where people set off to explore and take advantage of an afternoon by the sea. A very enjoyable day was had by all, many thanks to St Matthew's for organizing.

OUR VERY OWN ROSE

by

Pat Jackson

Saturday 26 May night took myself and Sue Woodcock to 'The Irish World Heritage Centre' in Cheetham Hill to support Katy Twemlow who was representing the Talbot Club in Eldon Place, Patricroft, Eccles in the North West Regional 'Rose of Tralee' competition. The winner of the regional final would be representing the North West in Tralee in August.

We were there with her family, Wynne and Arthur Newton from Holy Cross Church and members of the Talbot Club. Her escort for the evening was her brother John, a lovely pair they looked. Katy in a beautiful blue evening dress and John in a dinner suit.

There were 11 'Roses' in all from various clubs in Manchester all competing to go through to the final and become the 'Rose of Tralee'. Apparently, contestants come to the final from all over the world, even Texas and all with Irish blood in them.

After a lovely buffet meal the Roses were brought up in turn by their escorts and interviewed by a local famous Irish DJ. They were asked about their Irish connections, what their plans for the future were and finished with them doing their own party piece.

All too soon it was Katy's turn as we all sat nervously with tummies churning, we raised the roof when John led Katy to the stage. After being interviewed she sang a lovely song called 'A Mother's Blessing' from Angela's Ashes. I for one was really choked, she was lovely, a joy and so natural.

While the judges decided, the band set up and the raffle was done with Sue winning one of the prizes. All proceeds going to Christies.

And then the wait was over, the judges had decided............ in our eyes Katy was the winner, but the judges decided otherwise. The winning Rose was from the Irish World Heritage Centre.

Being the girl she is she took her defeat well. We all enjoyed a lovely evening and all agreed that Katy is the Rose of Patricroft, Eccles. We were all so proud.
